MISSION STATEMENT
The social issues of the day have always drawn our interest. Whether we were exploring our present by delving into our past or investigating our potential by challenging our status quo, the creators we supported were asking the tough questions and compelling us to dig for the answers. The search for knowledge and enlightenment keeps us passionate about the artistic challenges, of course, but ultimately it is the action that results from that enlightenment that keeps our fires going.
When we began our work at White Rooster, there was a very active, strong group of women working in our theatre community. Occasionally, we would see their work produced by one of the few companies operating professionally here. More likely, these women would be part of a collective, creating productions on current issues. Rarely, we could see a production fully written from a female perspective. These shows were always exciting, sharing a point of view that was lacking in the canon of Newfoundland and Labrador theatre. Several other companies sprung up along with us, focusing on plays from the female perspective, like seeds sprouting after a warm rain. It was an exciting time with extraordinary work. They persevered for a number of years, but many of these companies are now inactive and very few have risen in their place. To fill this void, White Rooster has endeavored to increase our development and production activity to meet the needs of our vibrant and growing theatre community. We are proud to have completed every project, met every promise, that we committed to in our 20-year history. These projects have led, one by one, to significant progress for women artists. But with the growth of our community comes new, exciting challenges. To truly meet the needs would require more resources than are available but, to us, is important to produce the number of shows we produce. We employ the artists, explore different perspectives, and put this work in front of different audiences.
